India 'colorized'

Robert Humphreys

(left, sitting)
and friends

Picture (about 1900) showing Rhoda Mary Allport (later Watney) (1883-1859) and her mother Hannah Mary Allport née Humphreys, cousins of

Robert Humphreys

, while in India to visit Rhoda's father  who was a Doctor with the army there.
Gertrude Mahoney visited him, in February 1904, and writes:  "We spent a very pleasant day at the Fort with Major and Mrs Allport. The fort is about five miles out from Allahabad and situated on the junction of the Jumna and the Ganges .... The Allports' sitting room had a balcony outside from which one looked sheer down a tremendous drop into the Jumna ...." She adds that the fort was built by Akbar and "has many relics of antiquity."
(Thanks for the picture to Rhoda's granddaughter Linden Blake)
