  Joseph Dimsdale, surgeon of Bishops Stortford was a Quaker. And Joseph' s cousin was Thomas Dimsdale FRS (1712-1800) who was a pioneer of inocu lation against smallpox. Thomas went to Russia at the invitation of Cat herine the Great, to inoculate the Russians (starting with the Imperial f amily) and she was so delighted with his work that she created him Baro n Dimsdale, and gave him a financial reward of £12,000.
